Here is a list of things to do in Cannon Beach in the winter, some of which you can do all year round, but are better in the winter months.
#1 – Storm Watching
Experiencing the stormy Pacific Ocean is an awe-inspiring event that will make you appreciate nature’s power. If you have a vacation home overlooking the coast, it’s even better because you can watch the storm from the comfort of your own home. But if you want to get out in the weather, Ecola State Park provides panoramic views like no other.
Be sure to pack a raincoat! You can test the winds along the beach or dance in the rain–we’ll have flashlights for you in all our homes for any periodic power outages. Embrace adventure during your stay!
#2 – Whale Watching
What if the weather improves during your planned storm trip? There’s no need to worry; simply change it up for some whale viewing! On their way to and from Mexico, grey whales migrate past our coast. You’re likely to spot them, or orcas, between December and March. For the best spout viewing, go to the higher viewpoint points. However, no matter where you are (granted you can see the Pacific Ocean), you might see a whale or two – so keep your eyes open!
#3 – Beachcombing
Check out these amazing spots for agate hunting: Arcadia Beach, Tolovana Beach, Hug Point, Cove Beach, and Short Sand beach. You’re bound to find some beautiful pieces of beach glass too. The best time to look is from December to March after storms; the erosion washes the stones towards the ocean where they get polished over time.
If you’re seeking for sand dollars, the best sources are along the northern end of the beach, according to locals. Arcadia Beach, which is located just south of town, is another excellent area to find a lot of sand dollars.
If you’re prepared, collecting your shells and cleaning them is a snap. Rinse them in a little amount of water to help remove the funk. To fully eliminate the stench, soak them in a 1:10 bleach solution after the sand has mostly been removed.
#4 – Go Elk Scouting in Ecola State Park
Keep your eyes peeled for Roosevelt elk while in Ecola State Park. These majestic creatures are often seen grazing near the beach in the winter months. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a bull with a large rack of antlers!
If you want to increase your chances of seeing an elk, go on a hike during dawn or dusk. These are the times when they’re most active. Be sure to keep your distance, though, as elk can be aggressive if they feel threatened.
#5 – Explore the Oregon Coast!
Cannon Beach is just one of many beautiful towns on the Oregon Coast. During your stay, be sure to explore some of the other nearby towns, such as Seaside, Manzanita, and Rockaway Beach. Each town has its own unique charm that you’re sure to love!
