Surfing in Manzanita
Short Sands has become one of the Oregon Coast’s most popular surfing destinations. The beach is one of the safest and most scenic places to surf along the coast, providing beginner and experienced surfers with great wind protection, and clean waves. Short Sands is also surrounded by beautiful hikes, and tide pools to explore, so there is plenty of fun to be had for any non-surfers in your group!
How to Get There
Short Sands is located just off the side of HWY 101 north of Manzanita. To get there, pull off into the Oswald West parking lot on the ocean side of the freeway. From the lot, enjoy an easy ½ mile out and back paved trail down to the beach.
Please note: Parking is free and there are restrooms available in the lot. We recommend not leaving valuables in your car. Dogs are allowed on Short Sands.

Best Time of Year to Learn to Surf
Summer is the best time to learn how to surf as the PNW winds are blowing and the waves tend to be small. Cleanline Surf Shop in Cannon Beach offers lessons for all ages and skill levels. NW Surf Lessons is currently not offering surf lessons, but we recommend checking back, as they are known for their friendly and knowledgeable instructors.
Already a pro? Fall brings ideal conditions with warmer waters, less wind, and consistent surf. If you can brave cold ocean temperatures and heavy rainfall, winter can reward you some epic surf, too! Water temperatures hover between 45- and 55-degrees Fahrenheit most of the year, so we recommend wearing booties, gloves, a hood, and a thick wetsuit. Check out daily and weekly surf forecast here.
What to Bring
Even though the sun may not always be shining on the Oregon Coast, we recommend packing your sunscreen, in addition to a towel, and your surfboard and wetsuit. To save a hike back up to the parking lot, we recommend bringing snacks so you are prepared when hunger strikes, and plenty of water to stay hydrated.
